What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is being talked about a lot these days, and almost all the reports are confusing. They make “cholesterol” sound like a really bad thing to have. They don’t tell you that your own body manufactures cholesterol in the liver.

According to Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, cholesterol “is synthesized in the liver and is a normal constituent of bile....It is important in metabolism serving as a precursor to various steroid hormones (e.g., sex hormones, adrenal corticoids).”

What causes High Cholesterol?

Some people are inclined to manufacture more cholesterol than needed, for genetic reasons. It runs in the family. In other cases, too much cholesterol can be caused by a diet too heavy in the wrong kinds of fats, combined with too little exercise to burn up the calories, and being overweight.

Weight loss, changes in diet, and getting brisk exercise can go a long way to maintaining wellness.

What is blood pressure?

Blood pressure is basically a simple thing. Your doctor measures it to determine how strongly the blood is pumping through your veins. This gives the doctor a general idea of the health of your veins and heart. Most of the time, this system works perfectly, but a few things can cause difficulties.

If your results are high, it’s called high blood pressure, or hypertension.

If your veins accumulate debris, the inside of the “hose” is narrowed at that spot. The heart then has to work harder to force your blood through the narrowed area. This increases the pressure in your vascular system, and causes an extra strain on your heart, just as it does with a garden hose.

In most cases you won’t notice any symptoms of this condition. Your blood vessels won’t swell noticeably; there won’t be any bruising, and certainly no pain. You might notice a slightly faster heart beat, but probably not. This is why you need your doctor to test your blood pressure.

This is why it’s very important to support and maintain a normal healthy blood pressure.

It's laughable how people show up to Kresser's site with an LDL-C in the 200s and he tells them to go have expensive particle number testing done. According to Dayspring, if your LDL-C is over 190, you're virtually guaranteed to have an elevated LDL-P unless you have Type III dyslipoproteinemia. People with hypobetalipoproteinemia also have an 8% cancer incidence (Welty et al. 1998) which places them substantially lower than the national average of 40.76%. So much for "low LDL causes cancer.".
Mercola blocked me for pointing out Chris Masterjohn's serious omissions about Smith Lemli Opitz. They're not really concerned about the truth are they?Of course not. I commend you for trying to inject some reality into their crazy little club over there.
"Cholesterol is a Janus-faced molecule. The very property that makes it useful in cell membranes, namely its absolute insolubility in water, also makes it lethal.” - Michael Brown and Joseph Goldstein.
Your videos opened my eyes. I'm ashamed to have trusted the likes of Kresser, Masterjohn, Wolf, and Sisson and these con artists will never receive another ounce of my support.
I'm not a vegan (sorry). However, these Paleo gurus upset me because they're just cashing in on laymen ignorance to make money. It's a slick marketing effort from top to bottom. The selling point of the Paleo Diet (this is the way you evolved to eat) is too seductive for the fat and gullible and they usually end up coughing over a few bucks in the process.

What's worse is these young people start eating extreme amounts of foods are known to contribute to disease.

I'm more frightened by the fact that I see skinny people going on low carb and Paleo diets too. The selling points made by the fad gurus must be pretty persuasive to appeal to people without a weight problem.
They also sell it as a longevity solution, a cure all and prevention for chronic diseases and for optimum performance.
Man am I sick of seeing Chris Kresser. You can't Google a single health topic without seeing one of his ill-informed articles pop up. I have no doubt that he's in it for the money. Him and Robb Wolf have those "Paleologix" supplements (as if supplements existed in the Paleolithic) and Kresser also makes commissions if you click on an Amazon link from his site and buy something.

He gets attention because he has an audience and he can make money from them, just like the Wolf and all the rest. He has a business model so he can keep going, unlike me.
Dr. Greger is my favourite for good research, as well as you of course lol.. thanks for your work!!! its brilliant.dr. greger always seems a bit high hehe. the only thing I hate about him is that he takes studies as they are...he doesn't really analyze the logic behind them. for example he compares tap water with added sodium bicarbonate with the alkaline water produced by machines, which should also be filtered, microoganisms destroyed etc. stuff like that.
Chris Masterjohn's looking a little chunky in his most recent interview: watch?v=Z790OXJfT-s I seriously hope this guy reevaluates the misinformation he's giving to people and promotes a more plant-based diet. But that will probably never happen.

I actually thought he'd be the last to get fat, but alas I see that spare tire protruding. He can get away with it for a bit because he's got a narrow face. People with narrow faces conceal their body fat easier.
They laughed when I told them I would burn fat with Cosmos Fat Loss, but then I showed them the results. Go google Cosmos Fat Loss to see their reaction.
Dr. McDougall's Right Foods Facebook, this fucking guy has his own product line what a Fake, snake oil salesman ,Low carb hater pushing his high carb product line what a joke.

grr, I can't believe that so many people take these guys seriously. Thank you Plant Positve for taking the time to debunk the gibberish of these clowns. I didn't realize that to many people these sort of talks are well reasoned and have no flaws in them. At least the vitamin O scam didn't cause atherosclerosis to the people who believed the ads for it.
Wow. Apparently, Chris Kresser was just offered a gig as a regular health columnist at the Huffington Post. His first article is going to debunk the "myth" that cholesterol and saturated fat causes heart disease...Unbelievable.I thought Progressive people were supposed to be scientific. It goes to show quackery knows no bounds.
Chris Kresser has called many things "myths." The mercury in fish being dangerous. The nitrates and nitrites in processed meats being harmful. How this guy attracted any following is beyond me.
I'd rather have my body make its own cholesterol than have it deal with any excess from animal products.
Thank you for producing these YouTube videos. I have learned so much from listening. So glad I found you and subscribed.
I dunno, but for some reason when I listen to Masterjohn and friends talk, I can just as easily imagine them in an episode of South Park screaming, "rabble rabble rabble!" and "DEY TEK UR JERBS!!" Maybe someday soon they'll have reason to.Masterjohn just did an interview with Mercola where he claims that eggs and cheese will protect against heart disease. And this guy has a PhD. Ridiculous.Masterjohn does have a PhD. For example, from the Ancestry Foundation: "Chris Masterjohn, Ph.D. has just completed his Ph.D. at the University of Connecticut". Well, for someone with a PhD, I'm quite astonished on how much ignorance can be spewed out of one mouth. Once this guy becomes revealed, his repitiore will be destroyed for good. GO PLANT POSITIVE!
There are plenty of whackjobs with letters after their name. Credentials are important, but nothing trumps the quality and veracity of one's arguments. Plant Positive has the equivalent of about 5 PhD's LOL.

...thoughts! I also have a neighbour who is a fan of WaPF who says that it is inflammation from gluten that causes high cholesterol. I don't argue with her because I know she has been seriously ill and got better from ditching gluten. It may be in a future vid but thought I'd check...

I seem to recall there is an interaction between alcohol and cell membrane cholesterol, in that alcohol temporarily increases the fluidity of the membrane but ultimately, long term use can 'stiffen' it. I know it's off topic but would be interested to hear your th.
From the WAPF site: "Chris Masterjohn is currently pursuing a PhD in Nutritional Sciences with a concentration in Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition at the University of Connecticut.". "Now the discussion is about to get really dumb. Chris Kresser is about to speak." Redundant statement.Man this is awesome. I gotta tell ya I am so grateful for all the work and research you do, your scientific approach to this debate is lacking on youtube, at least on the vegan side and I credit you for snapping me out of the fog and clearly answering many of the questions I had about the paleo thing, which I tried to do for about a year and a half and it never felt right. Your mission is great and I hope you go viral and change the world. Thanks again!!!
Imagine if the cholesterol confusionist logic was applied to glucose. Glucose performs a variety of important functions in the body. But does that mean that everyone should consume lots of sugar and high GI carbs? Of course not. Every chemical in the body has a healthy range. Even water and oxygen become toxic in excess. With cholesterol, anything over around 150 mg/dl appears to be harmful. Scary to think that some low carbers have LDL scores alone which are higher than 150.

Can you link to the study (there were two studies you said) of the first slide graph (CHD Deaths vs TC)?Love your work Plant Positive! I really liked this study from last year. I thought this was really interesting - using "Mendelian randomization" rather than intervention trials to test the link between lifelong LDL exposure and CHD. It shows that lowering LDL by 40mg/dl over a lifetime leads to a 54% reduction in risk of CHD (mortality, MIs and revascularization). Might be good material for your next video! It's in this very video and on a blog post at my site. Search the lead investigator's name, "Ference." Yes, an outstanding study. It's not the only one to use that technique but it was the most comprehensive of its kind so far. Thanks for watching!
What are your thoughts on having normal or low triglycerides and normal blood sugar levels produce the type A LDL lipoprotein which the type A LDL doesn't damage your arteries.
You don't understand the meaning of these biomarkers. See The Map Is Not the Territory and the last Eenfeldt video (videos 21 and 40 in playlist 3). Because you don't understand the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and because you have the perspective of someone trying to overcome metabolic syndrome, you have focused on the wrong targets.High Cholesterol is correlated to heart disease but it does't prove causation of heart disease. High Cholesterol is a symptom of heart disease not a cause of heart disease. Did you know that half of all heart attack patients have normal LDL levels go to John Hopkins and find that out. Once again LDL particle size is extremely important in diagnosing heart disease. High blood sugar, hypertension, smoking are more likely culprits of heart disease.
These are your beliefs. They are ignorant beliefs. How many videos have you watched here? As for half of all heart attack patients, this is covered in Playing Games With Your Heart 2 (vid 41 in playlist 1). Particle size - I told you I made a video on this. The video is A Large and Fluffy Distraction (vid28 playlist 3). You just wasted my time again. You have one more chance.

No such thing as bad or good cholesterol HDL brings your cholesterol from the body to the liver to be recycled HDL is only a lipo protein so is LDL. NO mention of LDL particle size it makes a big difference if you have type b ldl you are at a higher risk for heart disease if you have type a ldl your at a lower risk of heart disease. No mention of high blood sugar as a cause of heart disease, crp levels, hypertension, obesity or anything like that.

I made a video about LDL phenotype. Watch some videos and try to learn something before commenting. Blood sugar is covered in many videos here. Why would you say "no mention" if you haven't watched all the videos? I don't expect you to spend that much time here but why pretend you know one way or the other?
Hmmm ignorant am i? High blood sugar isn't a problem? Smoking isn't a problem? Correlation doesn't mean causation. I never insulted you when i commented on your video i never called you ignorant or anything like that and i am not attacking your belief system. All i am saying is that other things other than cholesterol also are a bigger contributor to heart disease than just cholesterol itself. I know someone who had normal cholesterol and still had a heart attack the problem was hi sugar. I said your beliefs are ignorant, not that you are. But the fact that you don't see the difference does indicate something about you. When did I say smoking and diabetes aren't problems? I don't hold out much hope of you understanding these videos so I don't expect you'll be able to muster any worthwhile comments. I'll just save us both some time. Why can't anyone accept the possibility that other things other than cholesterol could be the problem? When you go grocery shopping look at people's shopping carts see what they buy i could tell you what they buy plenty of sugar cereals, starch, plenty of bread, sodas, Vegetables and fruit are good for you so is olive oil, butter, coconut oil, drinking water, exercise. I don't think i am ignorant in what i am telling you. Its not the high fat that you are claiming.
I suppose we should give statins to infants now, those poor buggers are being poisoned by their own mother's milk. And poor chickens in eggs are being smothered by all that cholesterol in the yolk. You'd think evolution would have done away with that bit of bad design by now. That was sarcasm. The facts of the matter are that for a keto-adapted individual cholesterol levels are a sign of health - that fats are being transported to cells. Perfecthealthdiet had a good entry about this.
Damn. You seem very special. Are you an embryo? Does a chicken embryo actually eat the cholesterol in the egg? Does the hen get all that cholesterol from her feed? Are you nursing? Who says infants should get statins? Does calling it sarcasm make it less stupid? I have no problem believing you read the Perfect Health Diet site. They must be proud.
My question was straightforward enough - if cholesterol is bad bad bad, do you think breastfeeding does harm to infants?
Who said cholesterol is "bad, bad, bad"? Why would breastfeeding harm infants? What does this have to do with anyone watching this? This is the most blatant straw man in history. Nice going. I'm blocking you for stupidity. You earned it with unmatched efficiency.
This is a common idiotic argument I've been hearing a lot lately. "How can saturated fat and cholesterol be bad if they're in breast milk." Maybe you're still sucking on your momma's tit, but babies usually stop breastfeeding after about age 2. They need all that extra fat and cholesterol to grow. And the thing about eggs is bar none the stupidest thing I've heard this year.

I'll never forget the guy who said that babies need to be in ketosis. Then there was that fundamentalist Christian who called you a "Sodomite" and said we should eat an all flesh diet because God put only animals on the arc. This channel attracts some nuts, that's for sure.
We need the equivalent of a Golden Crocoduck Award for the low carbers and cholesterol denialists. This guy is basically a shoo-in.
That really makes me lose a lot of respect for Stephen Phinney. I remember him having a hissy fit about a study showing that a ketone body fuels cancer, claiming it was bad science. He needs to look himself in the mirror and see who the real bad scientist is.
A new large mendelian randomization study confirmed a causal relationship between LDL-C and carotid atherosclerosis, however HDL-C and triglycerides were not causally associated. Reference: Causal Relevance of Blood Lipid Fractions in the Development of Carotid Atherosclerosis: Mendelian Randomization Analysis.
